Introducing solids is an exciting milestone in your baby’s journey—but it can also feel overwhelming. With so much conflicting advice out there, many parents wonder: When should I start? What foods are best? How do I know my baby is ready?
When should you start solids?
One of the most common questions parents ask is when to start introducing complementary foods. While current health advice suggests starting at six months, it is important to see the whole picture and take into consideration gut development and signs of readiness, such as:
• The ability to sit up with minimal support
• Loss of the tongue-thrust reflex (pushing food out)
• Showing interest in food and reaching for it
• Ability to bring food to the mouth and chew (hand-mouth coordination)
Every baby develops at their own pace, so it’s important to watch your baby rather than the calendar.
What are the best first foods?
Instead of starting with processed rice cereals and other similar ‘baby foods’, a nutrient-dense approach focuses on real, whole foods that nourish the gut, brain, and immune system. Some excellent first foods include:
• Iron-rich foods like grass-fed liver, egg yolk, and bone broth
• Healthy fats such as avocado, coconut oil, and ghee
• Easily digestible vegetables like squash, sweet potatoes, and well-cooked carrots
• Probiotic-rich foods such as kefir or sauerkraut juice (in tiny amounts)
These foods support digestion, brain development, and overall resilience—setting the foundation for a lifetime of good health.
Avoiding common pitfalls
Many parents run into challenges when introducing solids, such as digestive issues, food sensitivities, or picky eating habits. Some key things to be mindful of:
• Gut health matters – A baby’s digestive system is still developing, so supporting gut flora is crucial.
• Not all “baby food” is healthy – Many processed baby foods contain additives, sugars, or low-quality ingredients.
• Rushing the process can backfire – Slow and mindful introduction helps babies develop a healthy relationship with food, avoid constipation and other issues.
